Culture and Corporate Philosophy

A true American success story, Marcela Alcantar immigrated to the United States from Mexico, became fluent in English, earned her Engineering degree from the University of Colorado at Denver, BSCE, in 1993, and founded the civil engineering consulting firm of Alcantar and Associates.  Her staff is comprised primarily of women and minorities, and has included a number of interns whom Marcela has mentored that went on to obtain engineering degrees.

Marcela is active in the community and advocates for women and minorities through her involvement with the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Worksystems Inc., the ODOT Small Business Initiative Advisory Committee, and Hacienda Community Development Corporation.

In keeping with Marcela’s original vision for the company, Alcantar and Associates is fully committed to advancing and enhancing ownership, technical capability, opportunities and recognition for women, minority and disadvantaged individuals and firms. Alcantar and Associates also strives to educate and encourage students interested in the engineering field, especially those from under-represented groups.

In 2007, the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) honored Marcela Alcantar with their Diversity Leadership Award: “The Diversity Leadership Award was created to recognize individuals or organizations that have exhibited outstanding and extraordinary efforts or initiatives to develop opportunities for women and minorities, and have contributed significantly to promoting diversity and cultural awareness within their organization, the transportation industry, or in a project or activity that supports the goals and mission of WTS.”
